I think we are on the same page with thinking the best designers are business strategists. The micro level that you are talking about from a freelancers perspective is also true for agencies. In agencies it’s not just about the agency’s positioning or strategy, also about the individual skills and attitude of the individual designers. I think you have an interesting take on the positioning question whether to position yourself as a designer or a business strategist:
“Those clients who come for UI design, leave thinking they’ve found a goldmine. They get business strategy consulting when all they thought they’d get were pretty pictures.”
I think most people understand that UI/UX is the game for businesses right now, but they don’t expect a designer to be a business strategist as well. I think this route of getting to business consultancy through design is a good one. I’m curious whether the other route, positioning yourself as a business strategist that uses design to help organizations, is also viable, now or in the future.
